The Mechanics of Brewing and Boiling

Heating water quickly is one of the most energy-intensive tasks you can ask a household appliance to perform. Therefore, coffee makers and electric kettles are characterized by high-wattage heating elements designed for rapid thermal transfer.

Electric Kettles (1200W - 1500W)

In North America, standard 120V electric kettles usually draw around 1500 watts. This is effectively the maximum continuous load allowed on a standard 15-amp kitchen circuit. The high wattage ensures the water boils in 3 to 5 minutes.

Fun Fact: In the UK and Europe, where standard outlets provide 230V, electric kettles routinely draw 2500W to 3000W, which is why kettles across the pond boil water nearly twice as fast!

Drip Coffee Makers (700W - 1200W)

A standard 12-cup drip coffee maker uses between 900W and 1200W during the brewing process to heat the water and pump it over the grounds. Once brewing is complete, the machine switches to a much lower wattage (around 50W-100W) to power the warming plate beneath the carafe.

Single-Serve Brewers / Keurig (1500W)

Pod-based machines like Keurigs need to heat a small reservoir of water instantly. They draw a high spike of around 1500 watts for a brief period (1-2 minutes) during the brewing phase. When idle and keeping the internal tank warm, they pulse on and off, drawing an average of 200W-300W intermittently.

Cost to Run Your Morning Brew

Because coffee makers and kettles run for very short durations, their overall impact on your monthly electric bill is quite low, despite their high wattage.

Calculating Daily Cost:
(Wattage ร— Hours of Use) / 1000 = Daily kWh
Daily kWh ร— Electricity Rate = Daily Cost

Let's say you run a 1500W kettle for 5 minutes (0.083 hours) every morning, with an electricity rate of $0.15/kWh:

  • kWh used = (1500 ร— 0.083) / 1000 = 0.125 kWh
  • Cost per day = 0.125 kWh ร— $0.15 = $0.018 (Less than 2 cents!)
  • Cost per year = $6.84

Can I Run a Coffee Maker on a Generator or Inverter?

If you want to brew coffee during a power outage or while RV camping, you must match your inverter or generator to the peak wattage. A 1000W inverter will not run a standard Keurig or electric kettle. You will need at least a 2000W continuous pure sine wave inverter to safely operate these appliances without overloading the system.
