Why Do We Measure Cooling in "Tons"?
If you have ever shopped for a central air conditioning system, you've likely heard the term "tonnage." Your HVAC technician might say, "You need a 3-ton system for this house." But air conditioners are surprisingly light—a 3-ton AC condenser certainly doesn't weigh 6,000 pounds!
To understand why we measure cooling capacity in tons, and how that relates to BTUs and Watts, we have to look back at the history of human comfort.
The Ice-Melting History
Before mechanical air conditioning was invented, people cooled large buildings, theaters, and food storage facilities using massive blocks of ice harvested from frozen lakes during the winter.
When Willis Carrier and others began inventing mechanical refrigeration and AC, they had to explain its power to a public that only understood cooling in terms of ice. Therefore, they based the measurement on this question:
"How much heat is required to completely melt one ton (2,000 lbs) of solid ice over a 24-hour period?"
The Math: From Ice to BTUs
To melt 1 pound of ice at 32°F into 1 pound of liquid water at 32°F requires exactly 144 BTUs of heat energy. This is called the latent heat of fusion.
- 1 Ton = 2,000 lbs
- 144 BTUs × 2,000 lbs = 288,000 BTUs total to melt the ton of ice.
Since air conditioners are rated by their hourly cooling capacity, we divide that total 24-hour heat requirement by 24 hours.
- 288,000 BTUs / 24 hours = 12,000 BTUs per hour

How Tonnage Relates to Watts
Now that we know 1 Ton = 12,000 BTUs, we can estimate how much electrical power (Watts) the system will consume. This depends entirely on the system's SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating.
As a rough estimate for modern standard systems (around SEER 14-16), an AC will consume approximately 1,000 Watts (1 kW) of electricity for every 1 Ton of cooling capacity while running.
