The humble phone charger has evolved drastically over the last decade. From slow 5W squares to massive 100W laptop-capable bricks, here is how USB charging wattage actually works.
The Basics of USB Charging Wattage
To understand phone charging, you only need one formula: Volts ร Amps = Watts.
For the first decade of smartphones, standard USB (USB-A) provided a flat 5 Volts. The small, iconic cube chargers that used to come with iPhones delivered 5 Volts at 1 Amp.
5V ร 1A = 5 Watts
As phone batteries became vastly larger, 5W became painfully slow. Manufacturers began increasing the amperage (e.g., 5V @ 2A = 10 Watts, or 5V @ 2.4A = 12 Watts). But pushing high amperage over thin USB wires creates heat and resistance. A new standard was needed.
Enter USB-C and Power Delivery (PD)
To safely push 20W, 65W, or even 100W+ through a cable, engineers realized they needed to increase the Voltage rather than just the Amperage. The USB Power Delivery (USB PD) protocol allows the charger and the phone to 'talk' to each other via a smart chip inside the USB-C cable.
When you plug in a modern fast charger, the negotiation goes like this:
- Phone: "I am an iPhone 14. I can handle up to 9 Volts and about 2.2 Amps."
- Charger: "Understood. Bumping output voltage from 5V to 9V."

Will a 65W Charger Destroy My Phone?
A common myth is that plugging a phone into a large laptop charger will fry the battery. This is absolutely false.
Wattage ratings on chargers are a maximum capacity. If you plug a 65W USB-C charger into an iPhone that maxes out at 20W, the charger will only output 20W. The smart chip ensures it never provides more voltage or current than the device requests. Using a more powerful charger is completely safe and won't charge your phone any faster than its internal limits allow.
The Charging Curve
It's important to know that a "20W charger" does not charge at 20W the entire time. To protect battery health, lithium-ion batteries charge incredibly fast from 0% to 50% (where it pulls the maximum watts), then gradually slow down. By the time it reaches 90%, it is "trickle charging" at just 2W to 5W to prevent overheating and prolong battery lifespan.
