The 1500-Watt Standard

If you walk down the heating aisle of any hardware store, you will notice a strange consistency: almost every portable electric space heater, regardless of size, shape, or price, claims to have a maximum output of 1,500 watts. Why is this?

The answer lies in the limitations of standard North American electrical circuits. A standard household outlet provides 120 volts on a 15-amp circuit. According to the National Electrical Code, a continuous load should only use 80% of a circuit's maximum capacity for safety.

Maximum Circuit Capacity: 120 Volts × 15 Amps = 1,800 Watts
Safe Continuous Load (80%): 1,800 Watts × 0.8 = 1,440 Watts

Manufacturers round this up slightly and cap their space heaters at 1,500 watts. This ensures that the heater produces as much heat as physically possible without constantly tripping the homeowner's circuit breaker.

Breaker Tripping Warning: Because a 1,500-watt space heater uses almost all the capacity of a standard 15-amp circuit, turning on a TV, lamp, or vacuum cleaner on that same circuit will immediately overload it and trip the breaker.

Do Smaller Space Heaters Use Fewer Watts?

Yes and no. A tiny desktop ceramic heater might be rated for 500W or 750W. However, if a heater is designed for a full room, it will likely be 1,500W. Many 1,500W heaters have a "Low" setting that draws exactly half the power—750 watts.

Interestingly, because all resistive electric heaters are virtually 100% efficient at converting electricity into heat, a cheap $20 fan heater and a $200 fancy infrared heater will produce the exact same amount of total heat (about 5,118 BTUs) if they both draw 1,500 watts.

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Space Heater?

Because space heaters draw so much continuous power, they are significantly more expensive to run than most people realize. Let's calculate the cost of running a 1,500-watt space heater in a cold bedroom for 8 hours a night, assuming an average electricity rate of $0.15 per kWh.

The Cost Calculation:

  • Electrical Draw: 1,500 Watts = 1.5 Kilowatts (kW)
  • Daily Energy Used: 1.5 kW × 8 hours = 12 kWh per day
  • Daily Cost: 12 kWh × $0.15 = $1.80 per day
  • Monthly Cost: $1.80 × 30 days = $54.00 per month

Adding just one space heater to a bedroom can increase a winter electric bill by over $50 a month. If you run multiple space heaters throughout the house, the costs can be staggering.

Space Heaters vs Central Heating (Heat Pumps)

While space heaters are great for warming up a single drafty room (zone heating), they are a terrible way to heat an entire house. This is because standard electric space heaters use resistive heating, which produces exactly 1 unit of heat for every 1 unit of electricity consumed.

Modern Heat Pumps, on the other hand, do not create heat; they move it from the outside air into the house. Because of this, a heat pump can be 300% to 400% efficient. A heat pump using 1,500 watts of electricity can pump 4,500 to 6,000 watts worth of heat into a room, making it vastly cheaper to operate than a plug-in space heater.

Tips for Using Space Heaters Efficiently

  1. Use the Thermostat: Never buy a space heater with a simple "On/Off" switch. Buy one with a digital thermostat so it turns off automatically when the room reaches the desired temperature. This cuts the runtime and the cost significantly.
  2. Zone Heating: Turn down your home's central thermostat to 62°F and use a space heater only in the room you are actively sitting in. This strategy actually saves money.
  3. Don't Use Extension Cords: Drawing 1,500 watts continuously through a cheap, thin extension cord creates massive electrical resistance, which causes the cord to overheat and creates a severe fire hazard. Always plug directly into a wall outlet.
