The Sweet Spot of Generators

A 3500-watt generator is often considered the "sweet spot" for homeowners, RVers, and contractors. It provides enough power to run essential appliances during an outage or power a 30-Amp RV, yet it remains relatively portable and fuel-efficient.

Typically, a "3500-watt generator" provides 3500 starting watts and around 3000 running watts.

What Can You Run Simultaneously?

You have a budget of about 3000 continuous watts. Here is what you can power together in a few common scenarios:

Scenario 1: Home Backup (Essentials)

  • Refrigerator (700W Running / 2200W Starting)
  • Sump Pump (800W Running / 1500W Starting)
  • LED Lights & Phone Chargers (100W)
  • Gas Furnace Fan (500W)

Total Running: 2100W. Total Starting (Assuming only one starts at a time): ~3600W. (It will barely handle this if staggered).

Scenario 2: RV Camping

  • 13,500 BTU RV Air Conditioner (1500W Running / 3000W Starting)
  • RV Converter/Battery Charger (300W)
  • TV (100W)

Total Running: 1900W. The 3500W surge capacity is perfect to start the AC unit.

Maximizing Your 3500W Generator

To get the most out of your generator, practice load management. Do not start high-surge items (like an AC unit and a fridge) at the same time. Let one start and settle into its running wattage before turning on the next.
