Horsepower Explained: Mechanical, Electrical, and Metric HP

The Origins of Horsepower
In the late 18th century, as steam engines were being introduced to pump water out of coal mines, James Watt needed a marketing tool to convince mine owners to buy his machines. He measured how much work an average draft horse could do pulling a mill wheel and defined "Horsepower" as a standard unit of mechanical work.
Watt defined 1 Horsepower as the ability to lift 33,000 pounds by one foot in one minute. Today, horsepower (HP) is still widely used to rate engines, motors, and pumps, but there are multiple definitions depending on the industry and region.
1. Mechanical Horsepower (Imperial)
This is the original definition created by James Watt, predominantly used in the United States and UK to rate automotive engines, lawnmowers, and internal combustion machinery.
- Equivalent: 1 Mechanical HP = exactly 745.69987 Watts (~746 W)
- Symbol: hp(I) or simply HP.
To convert to Watts: Multiply Mechanical HP by 746.
2. Electrical Horsepower
When rating electrical motors, engineers needed a clean, rounded number for calculations in the electrical industry. They standardized Electrical Horsepower.
- Equivalent: 1 Electrical HP = exactly 746 Watts
- Symbol: hp(E)
While the difference between mechanical and electrical HP is microscopic (0.3 watts), the 746W standard makes electrical engineering calculations for grid loads significantly cleaner.
3. Metric Horsepower
Countries that use the metric system (Europe, Asia) created their own definition based on kilograms and meters rather than pounds and feet. It is defined as the power required to lift 75 kilograms by 1 meter in 1 second.
- Equivalent: 1 Metric HP = exactly 735.49875 Watts (~735.5 W)
- Symbols: PS (Pferdestärke in Germany), CV (Cheval-vapeur in France), or hp(M).
This is why a European sports car rated at 500 PS might be advertised as 493 HP in the American market.

Worked Example: Electric Motor Real-World Draw
If you buy a 2 HP electric pool pump, you might expect it to consume 1,492 watts (2 x 746W). However, 746W represents the mechanical output at the spinning shaft.
Because electric motors are not 100% efficient (they lose energy to heat and magnetic friction), a 2 HP motor running at 80% efficiency will actually draw much more power from the wall.
Actual Input Watts: (2 HP × 746) ÷ 0.80 = 1,865 Watts.
Sizing Warning: Always look at the Amp or Input Wattage rating on an electric motor nameplate when sizing circuit breakers or generators. The HP rating only tells you the physical output torque, not the electrical input demand.
