When shopping for an electric bike or scooter, the motor's wattage rating is the first spec you'll notice. Typical ratings include 250W, 500W, 750W, and 1000W. But what do these numbers actually translate to in terms of real-world speed, hill-climbing ability, and legal classification? Here is the complete guide.

Understanding Continuous vs. Peak Wattage

Much like treadmills, e-bike motors have two power ratings:

  • Continuous/Nominal Watts: The power the motor can sustain indefinitely without overheating. This is the number used for legal classifications.
  • Peak Watts: The absolute maximum burst power the motor can output for a few seconds (e.g., when accelerating from a dead stop or hitting a steep incline). A 500W nominal motor might peak at 800W+.
