Power factor represents the phase displacement angle ฮธ between voltage and current. Apparent power (kVA) represents the total supply vector, while Real power (Watts/kW) represents real work performed.
Understanding kVA and Watts
A kilo-volt-ampere (kVA) is the unit of Apparent Power, measuring the total amount of electrical energy present in an AC circuit. In contrast, Watts (W) measure Real Power (the portion of energy converted into active work). The difference between the two is defined by the circuit's Power Factor (PF).
Generators, heavy-duty industrial transformers, and large UPS backups are rated in kVA, whereas domestic consumer appliances are marked in standard Watts.
If your building runs inductive machines (motors, large cooling compressors), the Power Factor drops below 1.0, meaning you will need a larger kVA generator rating to produce the equivalent real Watts output.
How to Convert kVA to Watts
To calculate real power output in Watts from a kVA rating, use the power factor product formula:
Example: Convert 10 kVA to Watts with a Power Factor of 0.8:
P(W) = 10 ร 1,000 ร 0.8 = 8,000 W (or 8 kW)
