Understanding Freezer Power Draw
A standalone freezer operates identically to your kitchen refrigerator, relying on a compressor, condenser coils, and refrigerant to remove heat from the insulated box. The typical running wattage for a medium-sized standalone freezer is between 100 and 300 watts.
However, freezers do not run continuously. The compressor cycles on and off regulated by a thermostat. A well-insulated freezer may only run its compressor for 8 to 12 hours a day (about a 30% to 50% duty cycle).
Chest Freezers vs. Upright Freezers
When it comes to energy efficiency, the physical design of the freezer plays a massive role. Chest freezers are inherently more efficient than upright freezers.
Why Chest Freezers Win
- Cold Air Sinks: When you open the lid of a chest freezer, the heavy cold air stays trapped inside the bottom of the tub. When you open the door of an upright freezer, the cold air spills out onto your feet, and the compressor has to work harder to re-cool the warm air that replaced it.
- Better Insulation: Chest freezers don't require an auto-defrost mechanism (which uses internal heating elements) and often have thicker sidewall insulation since footprint constraints are different.
As a result, a 15 cu. ft. chest freezer will almost always use fewer kilowatt-hours per year than a 15 cu. ft. upright freezer.
