What is Paralleling?

If you own a 2000-watt generator and you buy a second 2000-watt generator, can you plug them together to get 4000 watts? Yes, but only if they are inverter generators designed to run in parallel.

This process uses a special Parallel Kit (a cord with a bridging box) that connects the two generators, synchronizes their AC sine waves, and combines their output into a single heavy-duty 30-amp or 50-amp outlet.

Why Not Just Buy One Big Generator?

There are three massive advantages to buying two small generators and paralleling them, rather than buying one large one:

  1. Weight & Portability: A 4000-watt generator weighs over 100 lbs and is hard to lift into a truck. Two 2000-watt generators weigh 45 lbs each and are easily carried by one person.
  2. Fuel Efficiency & Scalability: If you only need to run a TV and a fridge, you only start one generator, saving fuel. If you need to run the air conditioner, you start the second one and parallel them.
  3. Redundancy: If one generator breaks down, you still have the other one to provide essential backup power.

The Math: How Watts Combine

When you parallel two identical generators, both their Running Watts and Starting Watts double.

Generator A (2000W Surge / 1600W Run) + Generator B (2000W Surge / 1600W Run) =
4000W Total Surge / 3200W Total Run.

With a standard parallel kit, this combined power is routed to a 30-Amp RV receptacle (TT-30R) or a twist-lock outlet (L5-30R), allowing you to power heavy loads like a 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner.

Important Rules for Paralleling

  • Must be Inverters: You cannot parallel conventional open-frame generators. Only inverter generators have the microprocessors required to synchronize their 60Hz frequency waves. If waves are out of sync, a catastrophic short circuit occurs.
  • Must use the same Brand/Model: While it is technically possible to parallel different brands if their inverter architectures are identical, manufacturers strongly recommend only paralleling identical models.
  • Never connect without the proper kit: Do not try to make a homemade "suicide cord" to connect two generators. You must use the manufacturer's parallel kit, which contains communication wires for the internal computers.
Start Sequence: Always connect the parallel cables while both generators are OFF. Start Generator A, let it stabilize, then start Generator B. Once both are running, you can plug your heavy load into the parallel kit.
